Now in its 8th year, Space Apps is an international hackathon for coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, and others in cities around the world, where teams engage with NASA’s free and open data to address real-world problems on Earth and in space. Space Apps 2018 included over 18,000 participants at more than 200 events in 75 countries.
Space Apps gives you the opportunity to bring projects to life for a wide range of applications. We are looking forward to seeing what innovative, creative ideas you bring to the community this year.
Space Apps is your chance to experience, experiment, and explore solutions to our universe’s biggest challenges!
Space Apps inspires local communities to come together, think intensely, and create solutions to important problems. Each year, Space Apps engages thousands of individuals in cities around the world to work with NASA’s open source data in a 48-hour sprint. Teams of technologists, scientists, designers, entrepreneurs, artists, and others collaborate to answer some of the most pressing challenges on Earth and in space.
The challenges change each year within the theme of Earth and space. Some of the most popular challenges last year included subjects ranging from autonomous spacecraft inspection, to monitoring disasters, to exploring the beauty of the Universe.
All are welcome in Space Apps. The common thread among Space Apps participants is that you are interested in space science and exploration, you are creative, and you want to solve problems. Over 18,000 people from 75 countries and in 200 cities around the world participated in the 2018 International Space Apps Challenge.
Space Apps introduces problem-solvers worldwide to NASA’s free and open data. NASA missions to Earth, our Sun and solar system, and out into the universe – all gather data in pursuit of new knowledge, to expand our understanding through new scientific discoveries, and to help us to improve life on Earth. By using NASA data to solve each year’s challenges, Space Apps teams learn about NASA’s data, and share in the creation and application of the knowledge that results.
Space Apps inspires collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking, fosters interest in Earth and space science and exploration, and encourages the growth and diversity of the next generation of scientists, technologists, designers and engineers. Space Apps is managed by the Earth Science Division, Science Mission Directorate, at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC.
Whether your interests lie in our solar system or beyond, outer space provides seemingly endless opportunity for study, exploration, and inspiration. Challenges in this category will invite you to think hard and be creative about space science and exploration, whether your viewpoint is scientific, technologic, artistic – or all three!
The Earth is composed of complicated systems – land, water, air, living things, and the planet itself. Understanding how these systems work together is important. Challenges in this category will ask you to craft solutions using NASA data – a story, a game, a video, any product of your design – that capture what it’s like to live on Earth.
